Privacy Policy

This policy explains what Social Karaoke ("we", "us") collects, why, and what you can do about it. In short: we collect what we need to run karaoke rooms and your account, we do not sell your data, and we do not run advertising.

Information we collect

  • Account details - your email address, a securely hashed password, and your display name. If you sign in with Google or Discord, we receive your basic profile (name, email, and avatar) from that provider.
  • Profile content - anything you add, such as a bio, favorite genre, and avatar or banner images you upload.
  • Activity you create - rooms you host, songs added to queues, playlists, favorites, chat messages, follows, posts and comments on profiles, ratings you give performances, emoji reactions (kept about 2 minutes), and the XP, levels and badges you earn.
  • Search history (signed-in users) - what you type into room search, kept for about six months (180 days) and deleted with your account. Our search cache also notes which account last ran a query and which account first ran it; those notes are cleared after the same six months. Searches made as a guest are not logged against you.
  • Joining a room - when anyone joins a room, signed in or not, we store a random session identifier, a stable identifier kept in your browser, and a one-way hash of your IP address. The last two exist so someone removed from a room cannot rejoin just by reloading. They are kept with the room's history.
  • Guest participation - guests do not need an account; we store the nickname you choose. Unclaimed guest XP is deleted after 30 days.
  • Technical data - your IP address, used to derive an approximate region from a local database (no lookup service is called) and to limit abuse (counters are kept about 2 hours). Our server logs, which record IP addresses, are kept up to 90 days. Reports you send when a video won't play are kept 90 days, as are rejected attempts to choose a profile handle, which are logged with a one-way hash of your IP address.

YouTube and the songs you play

  • Uses YouTube API Services - Social Karaoke uses YouTube API Services to search for songs, look up video details, import YouTube playlists, and play videos.
  • What we store from YouTube, and why - video IDs and channel IDs; video titles, thumbnails, durations and view counts; and channel names and handles. We use them to show search results, queues, favorites, playlists and room history, and to avoid repeating the same search.
  • How long, and how it is deleted - YouTube video details (titles, thumbnails, durations, view counts and channel names) are refreshed from YouTube or deleted within 30 days. Favorites and playlists store only video IDs; their titles are looked up again when you open them. Video IDs are kept as our record of what was searched for and sung.
  • Song and artist names - to show clean song and artist names we read them out of YouTube video titles. Names we have reviewed are kept as part of our song list; names nobody has reviewed are deleted on the same 30-day schedule. We use an AI service to help tidy these names. It receives video IDs and our song and artist names, never your personal information and never YouTube's titles.
  • Who sees what - searches are sent to YouTube by our server, so YouTube does not receive your IP address or account for the search itself. Your browser does contact YouTube and Google directly, so they see your IP address then: song thumbnails load from YouTube's image servers, the player loads from YouTube when you open a room, and profile pictures from Google or Discord sign-in load from those services.
  • The YouTube player and cookies - videos play in YouTube's embedded player in Privacy-Enhanced Mode (youtube-nocookie.com). YouTube may set cookies and collect information about your device when the player loads, and about your viewing once you play a video. That is handled by YouTube under the Google Privacy Policy, not by us.
  • Google Privacy Policy - YouTube's handling of your information is described in the Google Privacy Policy (http://www.google.com/policies/privacy).
  • YouTube Terms - using YouTube features on Social Karaoke also means agreeing to the YouTube Terms of Service (https://www.youtube.com/t/terms).
  • No access to your YouTube account - Social Karaoke never asks for access to your YouTube account. If you sign in with Google we receive only your name, email address and profile picture, and you can remove our access at any time in your Google account's security settings.

How we use it

  • To run rooms, queues, playback, and your account.
  • To keep the service secure and prevent abuse (for example, rate limiting).
  • To apply region-based availability rules for videos.
  • To send account emails you request, such as verification and password resets.

Cookies and analytics

We use a single essential cookie to keep you signed in. We do not use advertising or cross-site tracking cookies of our own. Our visitor analytics (Cloudflare Web Analytics) are cookieless and do not identify you - which is why this site does not need a cookie-consent banner. YouTube's player is separate and may set its own cookies when it loads or plays a video; see "The YouTube player and cookies" above.

Third-party services

We rely on a few providers to run the service:

  • Google and Discord - optional sign-in.
  • YouTube / Google - song search and video playback, described in the YouTube section above.
  • Resend - sends account emails on our behalf.
  • Cloudflare - cookieless analytics and network services.
  • An AI service - helps tidy song and artist names. It receives no personal data.
  • Hosting - our hosting provider stores the data described above on our behalf.

How long we keep data

  • Rooms stay active for up to 24 hours, then archive into a read-only history.
  • Room chat is visible only inside the live room and is never carried into the archived history. Chat is deleted from the database after about six months.
  • Search history is kept about six months (180 days), including the search cache's notes of which account ran a query.
  • YouTube video details are refreshed or deleted within 30 days; see the YouTube section above.
  • Server logs - our server logs are deleted after 90 days.
  • Playback-problem reports are deleted after 90 days.
  • Account data is kept until you delete your account.
  • Deleted accounts - when you delete your account, the rooms you hosted stay as archived history for the people who were there. Your name is removed from them, and the history no longer identifies you.

Your choices and rights

You can edit or remove your profile information at any time, and you can delete your account from your account settings. Deleting removes your profile, your posts and follows, your playlists and favorites, your XP and badges, your search history, and any images you uploaded. Rooms you hosted remain as archived history for the people who were there, with your name removed from the songs, the participant list and the chat. To ask for deletion of anything else, or to make any other privacy request, email support@socialkaraoke.com. YouTube data follows the 30-day schedule above regardless.

Children

Social Karaoke is not directed to children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from them. If you believe a child has provided us data, contact us and we will remove it.

Security

We take reasonable measures to protect your data, including encrypted connections (HTTPS) and hashed passwords. No method of transmission or storage is completely secure, so we cannot guarantee absolute security.

Changes to this policy

We may update this policy from time to time. When we do, we will revise the "Last updated" date above.
